http://liv.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2245235258&ref=nf

I'll be in Carnibar and Double Vision on Monday night, trying to get my points across and (possibly more importantly), giving away FREE STUFF!

Candidate Hustings take place on Tuesday @ 7pm in the Courtyard in the Guild, if you can make it it's a great chance to grill the candidates on what they'll do if they get voted in!

See you through the week!
John

As Communications Officer incorporates the role of Editor of the Liverpool Student this means that I have first-hand experience of how the newspaper is run and how it can be enhanced and improved, such as producing issues on a fortnightly rather than monthly basis as well as assessing other forms of communication to support the paper.

The new Guild website has already been a great success; it has had several thousand sign-ups; the Communications Officer is responsible for the content and development of the website, working with the Liverpool Student I would like to see the website updated as frequently to become a reliable and up-to-date source of news for students - focusing on stories that affect us directly. There is also the potential to introduce pod-casting, amongst other forms of electronic communication to improve communication between the Guild and students it represents.

The role of Communications Officer involves representation, partly through the annual elections that we’re in the middle of. The University of Liverpool has over 20,000 students, yet only around 10% take part in the process of running for positions or even voting in these elections. In my experience, I found I didn’t take part in these parts of being a student as I didn’t know about the elections, the candidates or what happened for the rest of the year when people weren’t chasing me for votes! If elected I’d like to make the democratic processes that take place - and the decisions that are made - in the Guild better known to the rest of the student body, as a greater understanding would in turn improve participation. I will also research ongoing NUS campaigns on increasing participation as I believe it is very important for the Guild to fully represent its diverse student body.

Using the Guild website, the Liverpool Student and other means such as SUB tv, I’d like to explain to the student body what has taken place at events such as Guild Council meetings to increase awareness, although not at the expense of other content. I’d like to make things as easy to understand as possible, avoiding jargon that can confuse, as once students know what decisions are being made, that affect them directly, they can make informed decisions and get involved.

Finally, through being involved in the Guild it’s clear that governance reform is a major priority this year; the reforms must reflect the diverse nature of the student body. As I mentioned with regard to elections, we must address why more students are not taking full advantage of their opportunities within the Guild, I believe governance is central to this.

Cheers for taking the time to read this, John Brunskill
